Once again we have forgotten our history. For years the Friends of the Library ran them with community volunteers and a paid staff person or two. They did a great job, but the system they used was outdated. Maricopa County offered to take them over and paid the RCSC to lease them. With the lease expiring (Fairway wasn't open yet after the remodel), the county said they would not pay the lease, but would eat the expenses of running them. We (the board and management) looked at the staggering numbers of users (mostly Sun City residents and often times seniors who were older and likely to be more sedentary), and quickly agreed WE COULD NOT AFFORD TO LET THEM LEAVE. THE SERVICE THEY PROVIDED WAS FAR TOO VALUABLE THAN THE LEASE MONEY WE GOT. Nothing has changed from my perspective, the library provides a valuable service to our community and the board should intervene quickly to stop this stupidity from going any further. I hope i am being clear.
